Extreme power for the largest timber in the forest
The AFM 85 Magnum TS lives up to its name: it is a colossus designed to tackle the largest and heaviest trees the forestry industry has to offer. With an operating weight of 3200 kg and a brute feeding force of 50 kN, this head is built for 30 to 40-ton excavators. It is the ultimate tool for high-volume processing operations and extreme final felling where other heads simply cannot move the timber.
Engineering and Design: Colossal Dimensions The AFM 85 Magnum TS isn’t just big, it’s immense. Its reinforced structure boasts a maximum width of 2060 mm and a rear knife opening of 1350 mm. This geometry allows it to act like a giant grapple, capable of manipulating monumental logs or large timber piles during roadside processing. Its felling capacity reaches 1000 mm (1 meter), eliminating the need for manual chainsaw operators even for the oldest specimens in the stand.
Feeding and Performance: 50 kN of Pure Force To move trees weighing several tons, speed isn’t everything; force is key. The feeding system, powered by 4 motors and 3 rollers, generates an impressive 50 kN of traction force. This ensures the head can feed and delimb large-diameter oak, beech, or pine without stalling, maintaining a feeding speed of up to 5 m/s.
Processing Quality in Large Caliber: Designed to work in an optimal range of 40 to 70 cm, the Magnum TS features a delimbing system with 3 to 5 knives that embrace thick stems with precision. It is the ideal machine for processing timber at the landing or performing clearcutting (final felling) in mature forests, ensuring every log is measured and cut with millimetric accuracy.
Fleet Compatibility. This head plays in the heavy machinery league. It requires solid bases and high-performance hydraulic systems:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What type of timber is the AFM 85 Magnum TS for? It is designed for what we call “oversized timber.” It is ideal for final felling of mature pine and spruce, as well as heavy hardwoods (oak, beech) and giant eucalyptus trees exceeding 60-70 cm in diameter, where standard heads lack sufficient force.
2. What machine do I need to move it? You need an excavator of at least 30 tons, though we recommend moving towards 35 or 40 tons. The head weighs 3.2 tons, so stability and lifting capacity at maximum reach are critical.
3. Why does it need so much hydraulic flow (450 l/min)? To generate 50 kN of force while simultaneously maintaining speed in such large cylinders and motors. It is an industrial machine; many stock excavators will require a twin pump kit or hydraulic modifications to achieve that flow.
4. Can it be used for processing at the landing? Yes, this is one of its best applications (“Processing operations”). Thanks to its 1.35-meter opening, it can grab whole trees left by skidders and process them at the roadside with brutal efficiency.
5. Is it slower than smaller models? Its maximum speed is 5 m/s, which is very high for a head of this size. Although slightly slower than the AFM 60 (6 m/s), its ability not to stall on knots or thick limbs makes its effective speed in large timber superior.
